And yes, you get to have a go. We’ll provide protective eyewear, racquets, balls and encouragement. You just need your sporty clothes, joggers (non marking soles), a water bottle and your enthusiasm.

The event will be held at ABC Squash and Fitness, 101 Raleigh Rd, Milperra.

Kids on squash court

Why get involved in a sport?

Childhood Obesity

According to the Garvan Institue of Medical Research, “1-in-4 (25%) of children and adolescents aged 2-17 are overweight or obese” and “Obesity plays a significant role in the development of cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnoea, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, depression and arthritis.”

An active child will often remain active throughout their life. This can only be a positive outcome.

Social Interaction

It is often the case that friends made, during participation in sport, often become life-long friends. In this age of digital communication it is important for children to interact with others, without the aid of a device.

So, why Squash?

Besides being the healthiest sport in the world, there are a number reasons why children should hit the court.

  • Over recent years there has been a lot of research into the long-term effects of high impact sports such as: all of the football codes and all of the full contact fight sports. The repeated head knocks are now known to have a terrible and irreversible affect on the brain. Whilst players do occasionally collide, on the court, this is unintentional and comparatively low impact.
  • Most sports are seasonal and involve long off-seasons. Squash can and is played all year round.
  • Bad weather can disrupt most sports. Squash, being an indoor sport can be played in any weather conditions.
  • Squash is one of the fastest, most strategic and energetic sports in the world.
  • Because squash can be played almost anytime, as long as you can find one other player it doesn’t need to be a “this or that” decision. If you already have a sport, you can also play squash. Playing squash, in addition to another sport will only add to your fitness, flexibility and endurance.
